Pelvic Organ Prolapse: when one or more pelvic organs drop from their position. You may see or feel tissues from the vaginal canal. You may describe this feeling as a heaviness or pressure and is typically worse at the end of the day. What you are feeling or seeing is muscle tissues, not the bladder or rectum as they sit behind the muscle.
There are 3 types of prolapse, cystocele, rectocele, or uterine prolapse and there are ranges of severity. Most women who have given birth, will likely have a less severe prolapse and over time may progressively get worse.
Optimize Pelvic Health & Wellness can help you manage your symptoms if we can get to them before they are too severe. If you are a candidate for surgery (in more severe cases), it may be a good idea to seek therapy to prepare you for recovery and to prevent the proplase from returning.
Typically, prolapse occurs when a woman pushes during delivery for more than 1-2 hours, struggles w/ constipation and straining to poop, multiple pregnancies, heavy lifting w/ poor technique, forcep or vacuum delivery, twins, obesity, and so much more.
Prolapse is one of my absolute favorite diagnoses to treat, bc often times it gives women so much relief and improves quality of life! With prolapse typically comes other symptoms that we manage as well. If you often feel pressure or heaviness vaginally, please do not be ashamed or embarassed as this is very common, especially after having a baby. Tell your provider you would like to seek pelvic floor services at Optimize and we'll schedule your appointment!
